What Can You Do About Bed Squeaks?
There are many things that can deprive you of a well-deserved rest at night. Noise or persistent noises are certainly one of them. A squeaky bed is a common disturbance in the bedroom. In addition to squeaking, creaking, creaking or grinding noises can also emanate from the bed.
We have dealt intensively with the subject of the “squeaky bed” in the sleep magazine. We have identified the causes and reasons that cause the bed to make annoying noises when it is in use. In addition, we have of course also looked for solutions and summarized them for you so that you know what you can do about a squeaky bed.
What exactly is creaking or squeaking on the bed?
Before you can solve the problem with the squeaky bed, you first have to find out why the bed squeaks at all or at which point the bed is making noises.
To do this, it is advisable to first remove the mattress from the bed and place it on the floor. Now you can try out whether the mattress emits a noise when you lie down or sit on it and move. – The mattress is rarely the reason for a nocturnal squeak concert.
You can now check the position of the slatted frame in the bed frame – provided, of course, that it is a bed with a conventional structure and not a box spring bed or a bed with fixed upholstery. Are there any indications that the slatted frame may have too much play and rub against the bed frame when it is loaded ?! If nothing can be seen here, you should also remove the slatted frame from the bed frame and place it on the floor. Then the “solo test” here, too, by applying pressure to the slatted frame from above. – If disturbing noises or squeaking occur when the slatted frame is loaded, the “culprit” has been found, if not, the bed frame continues.
When checking the bed frame, it is advisable to first test the corners of the frame or, if necessary, the corner posts of the bed by shaking them. After the corners, you continue to check the bed frame on the support rails for the slatted frame (and to a certain extent also for the mattress) by putting a load on it – pressing it. When you have found out at which point or points the development of noises or squeaks can be started.
In addition to the frame elements, the squeaking of the bed can also be caused by the bed frame being unsteady. The bed wobbles because one leg does not touch the floor or does not touch it properly. You should provide for a corresponding compensation with a suitable wedge or something similar.
Bed squeaks – culprit bed frame
In order to remedy the squeaking or creaking of a bed directly in the area of the bed frame, it is advisable to first check which fastening materials (e.g. what type of screw?) Were used to mount the frame. So that the squeak can be eliminated quickly and easily, you should equip yourself with the appropriate tool. If the frame has “game” in it and z. B. rubs wood against wood, it is usually sufficient to remove the screws or the like. (re) tighten or retighten. If the screws cannot be tightened properly, it can be useful to use a washer so that there is no space between the frame and the screw.
If the creaking or squeaking of the bed frame continues despite retightening the screws, all connections in the affected bed area should be loosened. Then the elements of the connection (opening in the bed element, surface on the bed element, screw / fastening means) should be lubricated. The following agents can be used as lubricants:
Soap / curd soap bar, used dry to rub the affected areas and areas on the bed frame
Paraffin is a waste product from the petroleum industry and is similar to wax, commercially available as a bar, which makes it easy to rub / smear surfaces
Candle wax z. B. from candle scraps can be rubbed on in a similar way to paraffin
WD-40 widely used multifunctional spray / penetrating oil – is simply sprayed on, is well suited for lubricating metal beds, although sooner or later it dries out
Apply a thin layer of silicone lubricant / bearing grease available from hardware stores or specialist retailers
For beds made of solid wood or with other sensitive surfaces, care should be taken when selecting the lubricant. – Especially if the bed frame needs to be lubricated in a visible place.
After the affected bed elements have been lubricated, the frame should be reassembled. Care should be taken to ensure that all screws / fasteners are properly tightened. Before you put the slatted frame and mattress back into the frame, you should check whether the squeaking has been resolved by the grease and shake the bed components that had previously become noticeable again.
Should wooden connectors such as B. wooden dowels have been used, you can put instead of lubrication on tape, which you stick around or on the wood connector.
If the bed is still squeaking, you should listen carefully again to see whether another area of the bed is responsible for the noise. If you have come to a result here, you should also loosen the connections there, lubricate and screw them tight again before testing again whether the bed is still squeaking or creaking…
Bed squeaks – culprit bed frame and slatted frame
If the bed makes noises and creaks, creaks or creaks because the slatted frame can move unfavorably on the bed frame support, there are a few things you can do to help:
Any gaps and gaps should be closed as a test to see whether the squeaking of the bed will stop. You can use old shirts, socks, scarves or scraps of fabric for this purpose. In addition, cork has also proven itself as a gap filler.
It can also be helpful to stick self-adhesive felt pads (for furniture) from the hardware store under the slatted frame so that the creaking of the bed is a thing of the past.
Bed squeaks – culprit slatted frame
If the slatted frame has been found to be guilty of the squeaking in the bed, there are still different ways in which the noise is caused by the spring base. Depending on why the slatted frame causes a squeak or a creak, there are different tips on what you can do to put the squeaky bed back in order.
If the spring wooden slats are stored in movable caps made of rubber or rubber, it is possible that these have become brittle over time and therefore noise has developed. In such a case, one can try with great effort to bring about a peaceful night’s sleep again. – To do this, you have to completely dismantle the slatted frame, treat each cap individually with talc, baby powder or silicone spray and reassemble the frame.
In the case of adjustable slatted frames with a movable headboard and / or footboard, the cause of the bed’s squeaking can also be found in the metal fittings of the adjustment. Here you should (regularly) lubricate or oil and check the correct functionality of all elements of the adjustment.
The central zone adjustment or central zone reinforcement of the slatted frame can also generate noise. In most cases, however, there is more of a rattling than a squeaking noise. This can be remedied by repositioning the slider and, if necessary, fixing the slider or slider with adhesive tape.
Bed squeaks – culprit mattress
Nowadays, the mattress is very rarely responsible when it squeaks in bed. In the past, when Bonell innerspring mattresses with undamped steel springs were predominantly used, it was more common that these tended to squeak, especially when they were used for a long time. So if you use an older mattress with a Bonell spring core, you should also check it carefully if the bed is noisy at night.
